The Design—Crochet Shawl Pattern
This modern crochet shawl is made from lightweight cotton and features an elegant lacy texture, perfect for spring and summer. Crafted with classic granny square motifs, the design brings vintage charm into a fresh, wearable piece.
Granny squares are construction in rounds, turning work at the end of each. Half granny squares are constructed in rows, turning work at the end of each. All squares are then arranged in a triangle and seamed together. A border is added to finish.

Materials
As written, you'll need category 1 fingering weight yarn (15 wpi) in the amounts of:
984 yds (900 m)
Other materials you'll need:
3.5 mm crochet hook
tapestry needle
scissors
Gauge
1 completed granny square = 4" (10 cm) square
Gauge is not extremely important unless you want shawl measurements to come out identical to sample shown.
Yarn Substitutions
The yarn I used is Hobbii Fio in the color Sandy Beach (01). This yarn is labeled a fingering weight yarn. Most fingering weight cotton yarns will easily make a great substitute, and some non-cotton fingering or sport weights could make nice substitutes. Hobbii has a huge variety of fingering weight cotton yarn, so you'll find a majority of them listed as substitutes below. Make sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog. You may also use yarn sub to explore other substitutions.
Non-cotton options that could be really nice:
