The Design
YES! It's CROCHET! The Highland Beanie is a classic ribbed, fold-over brim beanie that features mirrored short row shaping, a sophisticated knit-like texture, and a fun side stripe detail. It's gender neutral, so it looks great on both men and women. It's the perfect selfish crochet project and a great gift for loved ones!
Fit + Sizing
The Highland Beanie has a classic fit, with a stretchy, 1x1 knit-like ribbed texture for the body, and a 1x2 knit-like ribbed texture for the brim..
Hat can be made in 3 sizes—size 1, size 2, and size 3—and is designed to fit head of an average youth-adult with head circumference between approximately 19-24". Due to ribbed design, hat is quite stretchy width-wise, so can stretch to fit most heads. For reference, model has a 22" head and is wearing a size 2.
Size | Head Circum. | Hat Circum. |
Size 1 | 19-20" | 16" |
Size 2 | 21-22" | 18" |
Size 3 | 23-24" | 20" |
Materials
As written, you'll need category 3/4 DK/light worsted weight yarn (10 wpi) in the amounts of:
Size 1 | 250yds
Size 2 | 280yds
Size 3 | 305yds
Gauge
23 sts x 34 rows = 4"
I used WeCrochet Swish Worsted (pictured in the color Pucker). My second sample is Swish DK Bare (undyed) carried with Aloft Superkid Mohair in white.
Other materials you'll need:
4mm crochet hook
tapestry needle
scissors
st markers
Yarn Substitutions
The yarn I used, WeCrochet Swish Worsted is a 100% fine superwash merino wool. I really recommend using the same yarn for this pattern, because I think it creates the perfect texture, warmth, and stitch definition—plus, it's easy care since you can pop it into the washing machine. Although it is labeled as a worsted weight, it's slightly lighter than a true worsted. You could easily substitute many worsted, light worsted, and DK weight yarns for this pattern. You can also check out Yarn Sub. I recommend making sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog.
