The Design—Crochet Sweater Pattern
Wrap yourself in comfort with this timeless crochet sweater pattern. Crafted to provide a classic and comfy crochet pullover, this design ensures the perfect blend of luxury and ease. The Essential Pullover features a simple texture throughout, elevated fold-over crewneck collar, and classic knit-like 1x1 ribbing to complete the design for a truly timeless and easy-to-wear heirloom sweater to add to your cold-weather wardrobe—one you'll reach for for years to come!
The sweater is constructed bottom-up by making two panels—a front and back panel, then seaming them together at the shoulders and sides. Then, adding the collar, bottom hem ribbing, sleeves, and cuffs.
Fit + Sizing
The Essential Pullover has a comfortable oversize classic fit with a hip-length. It features a straight body, extra long tapered sleeves, and 1x1 knit-like ribbing along the bottom hem, cuffs, and fold-over collar. Sizing is based on Craft Yarn Council's standards.
It is designed to have a positive ease of 8-10". To select your size, measure your bust and find the garment circumference in the chart that matches approximately 8-10" larger. If you prefer to have more or less ease, select the garment circumference that reflects that number in inches compared to your measured bust in inches. I have a 34" bust and am wearing a size small for 8" of ease.
Size | Bust Circum. | Garment Circum. |
XS | 28-30" | 38" |
S | 32-34" | 42" |
M | 36-38" | 46" |
L | 40-42" | 50" |
XL | 44-46" | 54" |
2XL | 48-50" | 58.5" |
3XL | 52-54" | 62.5" |
Skill Level
intermediate | I consider this pattern intermediate simply due to the fold-over collar. The remainder of the sweater is quite beginner-friendly.
Materials
As written, you'll need category 3 or 4 DK or worsted weight yarn (11wpi) in the amounts of:
1380(1507, 1623, 1837, 1932, 2253, 2344)yds
Yardage noted includes additional 20yds beyond calculations needed for sweater.
Other materials you'll need:
4mm crochet hook
tapestry needle
scissors
st markers
Gauge
16 sts x 15 3/4 rows = 4" square (blocked)
Yarn Substitutions
The yarn I used is Originally Lovely Cria in the color Lipstick. This yarn is labeled a worsted weight yarn, but due to it's loftiness and that it's made from natural fibers, many DK weight yarns could be subsituted. I'd recommend staying away from economy acrylic yarns like Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn and Red Heart Super Saver. They will be much too dense and thick for this project. Make sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog. Here are some suggested yarn substitutions to try ou:

How can color theory and feels like alpaca be considered comparable? They are completely different weights. And you’d be hard pressed to crochet color theory with a 4mm.
