The Design
YES! It's CROCHET! The Essential Beanie is a classic ribbed, fold-over brim beanie that features mirrored short row shaping, and a sophisticated knit-like texture. It's gender neutral, so it looks great on both men and women. It's the perfect selfish crochet project and a great gift for loved ones!
Fit + Sizing
The Essential Beanie has a classic fit, with a stretchy, 1x1 knit-like ribbed texture for the body.
Hat can be made in 3 sizes—size 1, size 2, and size 3—and is designed to fit head of an average youth-adult with head circumference between approximately 19-24". Due to ribbed design, hat is very stretchy width-wise, so can stretch to fit most heads. For reference, model has a 22" head and is wearing a size 2.
Size | Head Circum. | Hat Circum. |
Size 1 | 19-20" | 15" |
Size 2 | 21-22" | 17" |
Size 3 | 23-24" | 19" |
Materials
As written, you'll need category 3 DK weight yarn (11 wpi) in the amounts of:
Size 1 | 280yds
Size 2 | 310yds
Size 3 | 325yds
Gauge
23 sts x 34 rows = 4"
I used WeCrochet Capra DK (pictured in the color HollyBerry and Morel).
Other materials you'll need:
4mm crochet hook
tapestry needle
scissors
st markers
Yarn Substitutions
The yarn I used, WeCrochet Capra DK is a 85% fine superwash merino wool and 15% cashmere blend. You could easily substitute many DK and light worsted weight yarns for this pattern. The wpi is 11, so feel free to use that + the gauge to determine if the yarn you plan on substituting is a good fit. You can also check out Yarn Sub. I recommend making sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog.

I absolutely love crochet short row beanies. I am making the Essential Beanie is a size 3 for my brother and the pattern is excellent. My only request would be to make the bottom right and left hat charts the same size so they can be lined up and taped together. The top right and left are the same size.
